Obituary - LEE JOHNSON
Lee Johnson died Friday Aug. 13, of cardiac and respiratory problems. A private memorial service was held Saturday, Aug. 14th, for his immediate family.
Lee was a long-time member of AYH's sail program back in the eighties, and was instrumental in getting ASI off the ground twenty years ago. Lee is remembered for his tireless work at Kensington, heading up the maintenance team. As head of maintenance, he diligently kept the boats looking and sailing great.
As one of the first ASI board members, he inaugurated our current policy of acquiring a new Interlake every year. Thanks to Lee's early efforts, we have a fine Interlake fleet today.

You know about Wet n' Wild Wednesdays at Kensington Metropark - Bob Dallos and John Johnson are on deck, to get you matched up with a crew, if you're rated - or with a skipper, if you're not. Then you'll get a little help from them at the outer dock when you're ready to take off, and return after your sail.
And there's Thundering Thursdays, same place, twenty four hours later, with Judy Martens, Dave Amsdill, Anne Ostroth and Don Caley to assist. Come sail with us!

7-16-2010 From Joe Jaeger: this Saturday's race at Kent Lake, 7-17-2010, we will be picking the Teams for the Kent Cup. You need not be present at Saturday's race to be selected but need to let Joe know by Friday morning, 7-16.
This weekend, June 25, 26 and 27, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra returns again to the Metroparks, for what have become free, family-friendly concerts. At Kensington, you can take out your favorite Interlake in late afternoon, cruise until sunset, then anchor off the west (Maple) swimming beach to enjoy the concert from your 'private yacht' as the sun
goes down. It doesn't get any better than this!
On Saturday, the DSO will be playing at Metro Beach Metropark, and at Stony Creek Metropark on Sunday. Time for all concerts is 8 pm. You and your family can enjoy these concerts from shore only. Program will consist of Tchaikovski, Shostakovich, Lerner and Lowe (My Fair Lady) and others.

7-7-2010 afternoon report from Dave Anderson: Manitou and Voyager III are in Little Current. All is well.
7-4-2010 morning report from Dave Anderson: Manitou and Voyager III are now at Tobermory, both sailboat and crew are doing well. They motored and motor sailed from JBM to Port Huron for a brief stop then over night to Tobermory. In Port Huron Dave and crew purchased line and pulley for the Maintou roller furling. They put the new pulley onto the bow pulpit and now the jib goes in and out without jamming in the roller furling spool. They will put the new line on at Tobermory. Note, Voyager III flew the spinnaker from Port Huron to Tobermory and also were under engine power. This allowed them to keep up with Manitou.

6-29-2010: Manitou's new dinghy, a Caribe L10, is being delivered to JMB today.
6-28-2010: Manitou's bent anchor pin has been replace.
6-28-2010: Overtures radio has been repaired and installed.
6-28-2010: Voyager III's auxiliary bulge pump circuit has been reconfigured. It is now on it's own circuit and has a 10 amp. circuit breaker located above the switch in the gray box. Note, a 15 amp. inline fuse is also located in the electrical panel. If you use this in auxiliary bulge pump don't forget to take the hose out of the engine compartment and place it in the cockpit for drainage. Next season the hose will be connected to an external port.
6-26-2010: On Tuesday June 29, Voyager III and Manitou will be prepared for the transfer trip up to Little Current, ONT.
No more local time shares for these two sailboats are available starting Tuesday June 29, 2010, until they return in the fall. Check with Norman Schmidt for availability in the North Channel.
6-21-2010: Marilyn Leece, Mantiou dinghy cover: The new Caribe L10 dinghy that has be purchased by ASI for Manitou may also get a cover from Marilyn if the ASI board approves the purchase. It covers the entire top of the dinghy, the engine, and half of the tubes on the sides with a drawstring closure which is secured at the stern. When not in use, the cover can be rolled up and secured to the bow.
6-21-2010: Jack Townsend, Overture: As you know Overture is down for repairs. I spent all day Saturday taking the exhaust system apart and working on the fuel system/tank - I picked a hot day, but I think I lost 5 lbs. The current Hydro-lift muffler has a split in it and can not be repaired. I checked what West Marine has in stock and the only unit they have available we not fit up properly. I decided to put the same muffler in Overture that Interlude has so I got with Mike's Marine and asked them to locate/order a Vetus LP40R. They checked Marysville today and they did not have one - said it would take a week to 10 days to get anything. So I pushed them to find another supplier. In the meantime I checked Torresen Marine and although they show one in stock when I called they could not locate it. Mike's called back and said they located one and could have it in 2 to 3 days. I told them to order it. If I can get the muffler by Wed or Thurs I think I can get everything re-installed in time to save the Fri - Sat - Sun timeshares that are already booked. I am also using this downtime to clean the sludge out of Overture's fuel tank - that means both L2 boats will start this season with clean tanks and we can monitor the build-up now that we have a start point.

6-20-2010: Dave Clark, Voyager III. Both sinks on VIII now have new drain hoses and are working fine. We may get a new galley sink faucet but the old one seems to be working OK. The new spinnaker line still needs to be installed and we hope to get it done this week.
6-19-2010: Dave Clark, Voyager III. Yesterday morning I picked up VIII's new spinnaker halyard. I have offers of help to get it installed next week. We purchased 3/8 in sta-set blue fleck with splicing to our shackle. Total cost for 90 feet including schakle with splicing was $89.28 from Mikes Marine. We ordered it Monday afternoon and it was ready Thursday.
6-16-2010: Overture has a temporary VHF radio to replace the original radio as it is being repaired.
6-12-2010: Overture's throttle lever has been fixed. Thanks to Jack, Joe and Marilyn. Overture is back in service.
6-11-2010: The throttle lever retaining screw snapped off last night (fortunately not while on the water).
I, David Barbour, am not able to get out there today/tonight. Can anyone else get out there to remove the piece still in the throttle arm shaft and replace? If not, I can try to get out there tomorrow, but I believe we have charters scheduled for Sat and Sun. It looks like we need a screw extractor to remove the remaining piece of stainless screw.
Manitou: FYI, A leak has been found on the heat exchanger where one of the brackets are. Lake water, not coolant, is what is trickling out. Don Sharpe is placing an order for a replacement heat-exchanger. Please monitor, and report to me if in the next week [until the replacement arrives] this becomes serious. Manitou is in service for time shares.
Voyager III: The Spinnaker halyard line still needs replaced. The Galley sink drain is not hooked up yet. Will be finished very soon. Repaired Dingy with 2 patches today. It is in sail house. 24 hrs. drying time for patch. I used the toulene from the dock locker in front of VIII and the toulene is still in the sail house right now. I will bring it back when I'm done. I put one new valve in the dingy. When we inflate it we will check the others again. The "Y" valve that Jack Townsend found not secured has been fixed. This was the waste dump valve that had to be disconnected when the
laws changed. It wasn't wired shut and had no plugs to stop any water from coming in if this had been accidentially opened. It is now wired shut and I installed rubber end caps on each opening.
Voyager III new main sail installed Friday June 4th. Vince did sail VIII on Saturday and reported no problems. Light
winds meant no reefing or real test of the sails. Vince said they had a nice sail though.
Interlude is fixed as of 5-21-2010 ,thanks go to Jack Townsend and David Clark for their efforts in troubleshooting our engine start/battery issues. Also, to Claire Zepeda, Joe Jaeger and Mike Perrin for their work in tuning the rig.
The Vessel Safety Check was completed on both L2 boats last Saturday, May 8, and affixed the appropriate stickers, so we are all set. Now all 4 keelboats have the VSC.
Bill Lane reported: Saturday, as far as I know all the boats remained in their slips.Tom Baker canceled and Jack Townsend held a limited class at the slip. Level3/4 had limited classes at the slip.Sunday Norm Schmidt rescheduled his class to May 23 because of afamily commitment. My class went as normally scheduled. Level 3/4 classes went as normally scheduled. Saturday the boats were heeling in the slips any use of the boats on the water would have resulted in negative experiences and possible damage to the boats. Sunday was a beautiful day and great for instruction.

Interlude update from Jack Townsend, The Racor fuel filter is fine and has no issues, the fix we developed for the broken fuel bleed bolt worked out great, and the third fix clinched the deal.
Donate $5 towards the new dinghy and you will get an email from Jack telling about the third fix.
Safety inspections done on L4 keelboats - L2 boats need documentations for final inspection.
All keelboat velcro for mosquito netting have been replaced
All keelboat radios, antennas, and antenna feed lines are checked and operational.
Manitou - operation of transmission shifting. To shift to neutral always go to neutral from reverse. This will assure the prop shaft stops turning in the neutral position.
Manitou's engine seawater cooling pump repaired. The woodruff key was not set properly in the pump.
Manitou - wind indicator calibration and check needs to be performed.
Manitou - new foam for some cushions planned. Oil pressure audible alarm re-hooked up and working but watching for problems.
Manitou and Voyager III bow leaks have been fixed.
Voyager III, don't forget to adjust the stuffing box as it was adjust to zero drip rate. Need to adjust before starting engine.
Voyager III main bilge pump has been fixed and the hand pump is also working. Voyager III shroud chain plate leak is repaired. The aux. bilge pump circuit change is planned. This pump is operating at reduced capacity. It needs work.
